The U.S. midterm elections were marked by young leaders, ethnic or religious minority representatives, and progressive speeches.

Progressistas and minorities renew Democrats in victory over Trump

The results of the American midterms between October to November this year (midterm) showed a fresh face for the Democratic Party across America. The main characteristics of this new image include youthful leaders, LGBTQ+ community members as representatives, independent women candidates, and those who stood out with socialist agendas.

A good example was James Talarico, an evangelical candidate who defeated President Donald Trump in Texas in 2026. Political science doctor Juliano Machado Pires attributed poor evaluations of the party during Obama's presidency from 2009-2017 negatively to their future elections.

Professor Camila Vidal, head of International Relations at UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), highlighted that Democrats were elected by a large number of individuals outside the economic-political elite of the party. These candidates have progressive or even socialist agendas, emphasizing issues such as racial equality, workers' rights and consumer protection.

This new image for the Democratic Party is due to changes in American politics over time, including falling unemployment rates recently and increased joblessness among ethnic and young Americans. This year’s election was marked by efforts to find solutions to social problems often ignored by previous governments.
